How to Use DigiD: A Plain English Guide
19 May 2026 by Luis Salas
If you live in the Netherlands, there is one login you will need for almost everything official, from filing your tax return to managing your AOW pension. DigiD is the Dutch government's digital identity system, and without it, most government services are not accessible online. For English speakers, the Dutch-language instructions can make it feel more complicated than it actually is. 💚
This guide walks you through what DigiD is, how to register, and how to use it with confidence, whether you are new to the Netherlands or have lived here for years.
1. What DigiD is and why you need it
DigiD stands for Digitale Identiteit, which means Digital Identity. It is the system the Dutch government uses to verify who you are when you log in to official websites. Think of it as your digital key to everything government-related.
You will need DigiD for:
- Filing your annual tax return with the Belastingdienst
- Viewing your pension overview at mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl
- Managing your AOW state pension through the SVB
- Receiving official government letters via MijnOverheid
- Registering changes with your local gemeente (municipality)
- Accessing healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) and insurance portals
Without DigiD, these tasks require an in-person visit or a lengthy phone call. With it, most take minutes.
Simple action: Before you start, find your BSN (Burger Service Nummer). You will need it to register. Your BSN appears on your residence permit, your DigiD registration confirmation, or any letter from the Belastingdienst.
2. How to register for DigiD
Registration takes about ten minutes and is done entirely online. The one thing you cannot speed up is the activation letter, which arrives by post.
Go to digid.nl and click "Aanvragen" (Request). Choose "DigiD aanvragen" and follow the steps. You will be asked for your BSN, your Dutch postal address, and a Dutch mobile phone number.
Once you submit, DigiD posts an activation letter to your address, usually within five working days. The letter contains a code you use to complete your registration. You have 20 days to use it before it expires.
When the letter arrives, return to digid.nl, click "Activeren" (Activate), and enter your username, password, and the code from the letter. Your account is then live.
💡 Tip: If you do not yet have a Dutch mobile number, you can still register. The letter-based activation works without one. Once you have a Dutch number, add it to your account in your DigiD settings.
3. SMS login or the DigiD app: which to choose
DigiD offers two main ways to verify your identity when logging in. The option you choose affects which services you can access.
SMS verification is the simpler starting point. Each time you log in, DigiD sends a code to your mobile number and you type it in. This works for the majority of everyday services.
The DigiD app gives you a higher security level, which some services require. MijnOverheid, for example, requires the app. It also makes logging in faster: you open the app and scan a QR code rather than waiting for a text message.
To set up the app, download "DigiD" from the App Store or Google Play, open it, and link it to your existing DigiD account. For the highest security level (called "Hoog"), you scan your passport or ID card inside the app and complete a short identity check.
Simple action: If you have a smartphone, set up the DigiD app from the start. It takes an extra ten minutes but makes every future login faster and unlocks the full range of government services.
4. What you can do once you are set up
With DigiD active, a wide range of Dutch government services become accessible from home. For older adults and retirees, these are the most useful:
mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl shows every pension you have built up in the Netherlands in one place, including occupational pensions from previous employers. Log in with DigiD and you will see your full pension picture within seconds.
SVB is where you manage your AOW state pension. You can view your payment history, report a change of address or bank account, and download official letters.
Belastingdienst handles your tax return and any refunds or assessments. Many returns are now pre-filled, meaning you just check the details and confirm.
MijnOverheid is the portal where Dutch government organisations send you official letters digitally. Once you activate your inbox there, you stop receiving most paper correspondence.
Example: If your AOW pension payments are about to start, you can log in to the SVB with DigiD, confirm your bank details, check the payment date, and download your first payment letter, all without calling or visiting an office.
5. What to do if something goes wrong
A few common situations and how to resolve them.
Activation letter has not arrived after two weeks: Log in to digid.nl and request a new one. There is no penalty for this.
Account is locked: Too many failed login attempts lock the account temporarily. Wait an hour and try again. If it remains locked, call the DigiD helpdesk on 1400. The helpdesk operates in Dutch, but the menu options are straightforward and staff are used to helping people through the process.
Forgotten username or password: Use the "Vergeten?" (Forgotten?) links on the digid.nl login page. You will need access to the email address or phone number you registered with.
Living outside the Netherlands but still needing DigiD: Contact the DigiD helpdesk to discuss your options. Some situations can be resolved using a foreign mobile number.
Setting up DigiD takes an afternoon at most, and the activation letter is the only real wait. Once it is done, you will use it quietly in the background for years, saving time every time you need to deal with the Dutch government. 💛
